Miley Cyrus' VMA performance breaks Twitter record

Miley Cyrus' controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards is now the most-tweeted moment of the year.

Twitter announced on Monday that Miley and her provocative dancing with singer Robin Thicke set a record on the social networking site, garnering 306,000 tweets per minute. Four-point-five million tweets about Miley went out during the award show's two-hour airtime.

The performance beat out the previous record holder, Beyonce's Super Bowl halftime show, which brought in 231,000 tweets per minute in February.

Miley may have went home without a moonman, but she's proving she played a part in the network's ratings boost.  Last year, the entire VMA ceremony saw a total of 96,000 tweets per minute.  That pales in comparison to the 306,000 that came in from Miley's appearance alone on the show this year.

The singer tweeted about her social media record, but remained silent about what many had to say about her onstage antics.
